The art and practice of leadership has been studied for most of recorded human history. Yet, there remains across all facets of society a critical need for and, seemingly, a limited supply of innovative, fully committed and well prepared individuals available and willing to step forward and meet the challenges of leading positive change. This is felt acutely in the state of West Virginia from the community and enterprise levels through to elected government and board appointed corporate and NPO executive positions. West Virginia and its community leaders are not alone in recognizing this need, as evidenced by the proliferation of leadership development programs emerging at universities across the nation.

At West Virginia University we believe that there is latent, under-developed leadership ability and potential in a great many of our students across all major fields of study; many more than previously assumed. Secondly, we believe most of our students will be urged to step forward to fill important leadership roles – no matter how temporary – at numerous points in their careers, in their lives as family members, and as active participates in voluntary clubs, associations, in communities, and other goal – directed groups and teams.

We have built and implemented a high quality academic program, the 18 credit undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies. Further, we are developing numerous complementary and associated courses, events, and partnerships to enrich our students learning and practice of leadership.

Come join us at WVU to learn to lead, to lead with greater long term impact; and to also become more skilled and productive followers along the way.
